Why Does a Root Canal Leave Your Mouth Sore? Most patients are terrified of the words root canal, but we want to reassure you that it's not something to be afraid of. If you are in pain from an infection in your tooth, the root canal will make you feel better and we will make you as comfortable as possible during the procedure.

If you're wondering why a root canal leaves your mouth sore, we will explain.

What is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure that is used when the pulp – the layer of the teeth that contains the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue – is infected. As with any infection, it needs to be treated and a root canal is used to make a small opening within the tooth and clean the infection present. Then the tooth is sealed.

Can a Root Canal Leave Your Mouth Sore?

Depending on where in the mouth the root canal is performed, it can leave your mouth sore. You will need to keep your mouth open while the tooth is getting fixed and this can make your jaw tired and sore.

Keep in mind that you will get numbed before the root canal begins and will not feel any pain while the procedure is going on. There may be discomfort afterwards, but that should be nothing compared to the pain from an infection. As with any infection, it will take a few days to feel normal again.

What Can Help the Pain?

If your mouth is sore after a root canal treatment, you can take over-the-counter medications of your choice as needed. It's important to keep your mouth clean, so we recommend that you swish your mouth with salt water when you get home and repeat several times a day, to allow the mouth to recover.

A root canal can leave your mouth sore, but the pain should not be severe. If you are concerned, please call our office and we can schedule a follow up visit.
