Invisalign for Teens
For many teenagers, traditional metal braces can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. That’s why we here at Pickens Family Dentistry, offer an alternative solution to metal braces called Invisalign Teen. Invisalign is a form of orthodontic treatment that involves plastic trays, known as aligners. These aligners are specifically molded to fit your teeth and help to correct mild to severe cases of misaligned teeth. Invisalign Teen can help correct overbites, overcrowding, underbites, and any gaps you may have between teeth. The aligners are virtually invisible and also removable, offering the discretion and comfort your teen desires.
Traditional Braces vs. Invisalign Teen
Traditional braces are not removable. A series of metal brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected through the use of rubber bands and a thin metal wire. As the treatment progresses, the wire is tightened, and the teeth shift to their desired location. Most treatments involving traditional braces can last two years or more depending on each circumstance. Certain foods should be avoided, as they may get caught in the brackets or even cause damage. You will need to visit us at least once a month for adjustments.
In common cosmetic cases, Invisalign Teen can be just as effective as traditional braces. If the correction involves more complex issues, than traditional metal braces may be necessary. With Invisalign, you wear each tray for about two weeks. You will then be given a new one that is slightly different. The difference in each tray results in small movement but ultimately adds up to a big change. The Invisalign tray is designed to be worn about 22 hours a day, and should only be taken out when brushing your teeth or eating food. It’s a small price to pay to have no dietary restrictions. The length of treatment can vary from 9 months to 2 years depending on the severity of each case. You will need to visit us once every 4 to 6 weeks to make sure the treatment is progressing smoothly.
Until recently, Invisalign wasn’t recommended for teens. Orthodontists believed that teens would not wear their aligners for the recommended length per day. They were also concerned with erupting permanent teeth (teeth still emerging from the gums). Well, Invisalign created a compliance indicator to ensure that teens would wear their aligners. The indicator is a small colored dot, located near the back of the aligner. If the aligner is being worn, the dot will disappear over time. Because of this, research has shown that most teens wear their aligners for the recommended length each day. The aligners can also have “eruption tabs” built in, to compensate for teeth that have not fully erupted yet. Thanks to these technological advancements, we can now ensure your teen will wear the aligner and enjoy all the benefits Invisalign has to offer.
