Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Those who have to lie beside someone who snores or has sleep apnea have trouble sleeping, but the person that suffers from snoring or sleep apnea is going to have more trouble. Both parties want solutions to these ailments. Luckily for both parties, we here at Pickens Family Dentistry can help! There are numerous different things that we can do to help you deal with the symptoms of snoring and sleep apnea. Some treatments are simply advice we can offer, but other treatments are devices that can help alleviate the symptoms of snoring and sleep apnea.

Simple Treatments You Can Try

Coming to see us is a very good idea if you suffer from snoring or sleep apnea, or both. We can help see if there is a physical reason that this is happening, and can help you overcome the symptoms so that you can get a better night’s sleep. However, until you can get in to see us, here are a few things you may want to try at home to see if the symptoms decrease.
•  Try sleeping on your sides instead of your back
•  Try exercising to see if losing a little weight can help reduce or eliminate your symptoms
•  Avoid drinking alcohol prior to going to bed
•  Stop smoking, if you do, as this can worsen the problem
•  Nasal dilators that keep your nasal passages open while you sleep
•  Keep medications on hand in case you get a cold or stuffed up, so the symptoms can quickly be treated
•  Get plenty of sleep, as your symptoms are going to be worse if you are exhausted

Give each of those a try while you are preparing to come in and see us for sleep apnea or snoring treatment. If these don’t do enough, then it is time to come in and look at an oral device to help.

Oral Devices for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

One oral device is a splint that helps to hold your tongue in place. By wearing this device, your tongue is less likely to slide back into your airway and obstruct your breathing at night. The other oral device that we can help you with is a mouthguard that helps to hold your jaw in a more forward position than it would naturally sit while you slept. These mouthguards are customized to fit your mouth, and they keep your teeth exactly where they need to be to help keep your airway as open as possible.

We can help you if you suffer from snoring and sleep apnea, but you need to come in and see us for us to help. Give us a call today at (360) 254-6411, and let us know what is going on.
